Starting from Scratch: My Path to Creating Tobsters
Pets have always been a constant in my life. As a child, our home was never without dogs or cats. I felt a genuine connection to them — a bond that was simple, instinctual, and deeply comforting. As a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and even volunteered at a local animal hospital. That summer, I learned a lot — including the fact that I wasn’t meant to be in that field. Still, my love for animals never faded.
Life took me in another direction. I started working at a small, family-owned construction company while finishing school, and not long after graduating, I found myself in the AEC industry — architecture, engineering, and construction — where I worked in marketing from 2010 until early 2024.
But something inside me kept tugging at a different path. I often found myself feeling disconnected from the work. And no matter where I was or what I was doing, if I saw a dog walking down the street or a cat lounging on a windowsill, I couldn't help but smile and say hello. Animals have always grounded me — they bring out the most compassionate parts of who I am.
Back in 2010, I adopted Toby — the sweet rescue pup who would unknowingly inspire everything that came next (you may have read his story). Fast forward to 2024, and after stepping away from my marketing career, I felt a calling I couldn’t ignore any longer: it was time to do something with animals. Not just for them, but because of them.
That’s when the idea for Tobsters began.
I didn’t have a background in product development or retail, but I knew I wanted to build something meaningful. I started researching, reading everything I could, and eventually flew halfway around the world to attend the largest pet industry trade show. That trip opened my eyes to what was possible. I saw products and innovations that hadn’t yet made it to the U.S. market. I realized there was an opportunity to do something different — something thoughtful, stylish, and purpose-driven.
So I took a deep breath, made my first order, and waited. And on June 11, 2024, Tobsters officially opened.
Starting a business is terrifying. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t overwhelmed at times — especially launching in a volatile market with changing tariffs and logistical uncertainty. But with every doubt came a quiet reminder of why I started: because animals matter. Because Toby changed my life. Because I believe pet products can be both beautiful and impactful — and every purchase can help animals in need.
Tobsters is still just beginning, and so am I. I'm based in South Florida, where I live with my husband and our two daughters — and of course, Toby, Peach (our retriever), and our two guinea pigs, Buzz-Buzz, and Betsy. They’ve all cheered me on through this journey, and now I’m so proud to share it with you.
